Think and Grow Rich Highlights

Think and Grow Rich Highlights

Books & Highlights
My latest highlights post. From Napolean Hill’s Think and Grow Rich.   Page 9 I had learned, from years of experience with men, that when a man really DESIRES a thing so deeply that he is willing to stake his entire future on a single turn of the wheel in order to get it, he is sure to win.   Page 10 Psychologists have correctly said that "when one is truly ready for a thing, it puts in its appearance."   Page 10 What a different story men would have to tell if only they would adopt a DEFINITE PURPOSE, and stand by that purpose until it had time to become an all- consuming obsession!   Page 11 That is one of the tricks of opportunity. It has a sly…

Relationship Goals Idea – Top 10 Problems To Solve

Relationship Goals Idea – Top 10 Problems To Solve

Goals & Plans
Those who kept warm relationships got to live longer and happier, said Waldinger, and the loners often died earlier. “Loneliness kills,” he said. “It’s as powerful as smoking or alcoholism.” The quote above is from this article about happiness and health, and I will try to sum it up with yet another quote: Close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives, the study revealed. Right after reading the article, I started thinking about one of my past goals which is about my relationship with my girlfriend. The goal involves listing the problems that affected our relationship and making plans to solve them throughout a year. It was very helpful for us at the time so I would like to share how you can…

How To Set Goals About Money

How To Set Goals About Money

Goals & Plans
I was sitting at my desk, staring blankly at the stuff that needs to be done, without any motivation to do anything. To motivate myself a little I asked myself why do I need to do all this stuff. The answer was one of my goals: To get my business to a higher level of income. Asking this question and answering it didn’t work though, it didn’t give me any extra motivation. Usually, relating a task to one of my goals gives me motivation, but that time it didn’t work. I clearly knew that I had to do some stuff in order to get my business to a higher level of income, it was one of my goals I reviewed daily, and worked so hard to reach. Yet, it didn’t…

How Not To Train For A 10km Run

How Not To Train For A 10km Run

Health & Fitness, Mood & Motivation
About 3 months ago, I learned that there will be a marathon in Istanbul, Turkey on November 12th. My first reaction was: I have to be in this thing. By no means I am a marathon runner. The longest distance I ran up to that date was probably around 8-9kms, but I had a great urge to participate in the event. The event had 15km and 10km categories as well, so I decided to do a 10km. Why So Enthusiastic? I don’t know exactly why I was very enthusiastic to participate in this event but I think it was a combination of these things: 1. I Like Running Even though I never ran a marathon before, I enjoy running a lot, and I do it regularly almost every week for…

Tips to Not Forget About Your Goals

Tips to Not Forget About Your Goals

Goals & Plans
Even if you don’t want to take any action towards your goals, it is still beneficial to keep them in mind. Having goals in mind can direct your actions in a way that you actually end up doing things towards your goals without being consciously aware of it. So here are my four tips to not forget about goals: Make plans to reach your goals This one is my preferred method to not forget about goals. By having plans for goals, and working according to these plans, goals come to mind naturally and frequently. Doing this not only keeps goals in mind but also forces one to do things to reach goals. Set reminders to go over your goals If you don’t want to make any plans, an easy way…

When Breath Becomes Air Highlights

Books & Highlights
Here is another highlights post from me. This time highlights are from When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi and Abraham Verghese.   Page 31 Literature not only illuminated another’s experience, it provided, I believed, the richest material for moral reflection.   Page 39 A word meant something only between people, and life’s meaning, its virtue, had something to do with the depth of the relationships we form.   Page 39 It was the relational aspect of humans—i.e., “human relationality”—that undergirded meaning.   Page 101 He paused. “Paul,” he said, “do you think my life has meaning? Did I make the right choices?” It was stunning: even someone I considered a moral exemplar had these questions in the face of mortality.   Page 114 Our patients’ lives and identities may…

My Travel Essentials

My Travel Essentials

Products
I find a lot of time to devote to myself while travelling. I read, I write, I work on a personal project, I listen to music etc.. To be able to do these I need some stuff with me; my travel essentials: Lightweight Laptop - I need my laptop for pretty much all of my personal projects. My laptop being lightweight and thin to make travelling with it easier was actually a big factor while deciding which one to buy. I am using an HP Spectre x360 right now. High Capacity Powerbank - This is a powerbank that can even charge my laptop. Some might think this would be too heavy to carry around but it is around 0.5kg, so it is no a big deal, at least for me.…

Eating In Moderation: Semi-Vegetarian?

Eating In Moderation: Semi-Vegetarian?

Health & Fitness
About two months ago, I made a not very educated decision. I stopped eating chicken and processed meat products such as sausage or salami. I thought I don’t need to do a lot of research to know that these are not very healthy for me. I was trying to eat healthier so I stopped eating these and said myself I will see how it goes. I was calling myself a semi-vegetarian as a joke but it turns out this actually is a term. Or at least it is used commonly over the internet. I don’t know whether it is an official term or who gets to decide that. Anyways, to be honest, I don’t feel any healthier after two months, and I still don’t know what I should expect by…

Goals: Why Bother?

Goals: Why Bother?

Goals & Plans
Last week my friend asked me what my goals are in life. My answer was “Oh, I can actually just show them to you right now. I have them written down here.” He was very surprised that I actually had spent time thinking about my goals, and have them readily available. He said “These are really cool, I wish I also had goals like this.” That wasn’t the first time I had a conversation like this. Whenever I show my goals to someone, a similar conversation happens. Everybody wants to have some goals but most don’t have any. Perhaps it is because nobody really knows what good are them or what to do with them. So Really, Why Do I Have Goals? I basically have goals because there are things…

Zero To One Highlights

Zero To One Highlights

Books & Highlights
For a while, I had this idea about creating a “my highlights from a book” post. I thought it would be nice to just share highlights instead of writing a review in my own words to tell you what I got from a book. I was reading Zero to One by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters, and halfway through I thought this book is a good candidate for a highlights post. I was planning to type highlights one by one, but looks like there is a better way if you have a Kindle. Apparently, Kindle can email you your highlights and notes from a specific book. You get a nice PDF to print, and an Excel file to play around with. Anyways, since this PDF is probably better than what…

BJJ vs Exercising At A Gym

BJJ vs Exercising At A Gym

Health & Fitness, Mood & Motivation
“Human beings naturally continue doing things they like and they don’t continue what they don’t like.” -Haruki Murakami Even though I consider myself as an active person, I have always struggled with exercising regularly. Whenever my friends tell me there is a pick up soccer or basketball game, I am in. But these activities are every now and then, and for me, exercising regularly has always meant going to a gym regularly or doing similar stuff outdoors. At least until I recently started BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). I should probably first mention that I am in no place to make judgements about the sport of BJJ. I only had a couple training sessions so far. Today, I would like to speak more about the change in my perception of exercising…

Strandbeests – New Forms of Life And Their Mini Models

Products
I would like talk about some new model kits I have discovered recently. They are mini Strandbeests, and actual Strandbeests are referred to as new forms of life by their creator Theo Jansen. He has been building and improving them for some time. Compared to the size of the models, his Strandbeests are actually huge. When I saw the video of these big skeletons move smoothly on a beach I was beyond impressed. You should definitely check it out here. Regarding the models, I am actually not sure if these are “satisfying” enough for model hobbyists because Strandbeest models are actually not very challenging to build. Some people might even consider them as educational toys. I built two and it took me about an hour to build each but it…

8 Little Things I Try To Keep In Mind When I Am In A Bad Mood

Mood & Motivation
From time to time I get in a bad mood and I don’t feel like doing anything. Sometimes this happens for no apparent reason, and I can’t find a way to improve my mood. Whenever this happens I look at a small list I crafted over time. I thought this list might help others too so I am sharing it here. Disclaimer: I am not a psychologist or a doctor. These are only my personal suggestions that worked for me so far. Be Hardworking No matter how bad it gets I believe working hard overall always brings new opportunities. Sometimes your work might be wasted but as long as you keep going you will see the benefits. Eat Well Live Well When I am in a bad mood I tend…

At What Point Did You Start Having Plans?

At What Point Did You Start Having Plans?

Goals & Plans
Couple days ago I noticed that I check my weekly planner about a hundred times a day, which is fine, I like having plans and sticking to them. But I also noticed that it feels like I had some sort of weekly/daily plan to keep myself on track since the beginning of time. I had to stop and think for a couple minutes before I could bring back memories about how this whole goal oriented lifestyle that is full of planning and scheduling started. I think it all started when I decided to say no to my habit of not getting anything done. Every single day I was coming home from work to do nothing. I was too lazy to cook anything for myself so I ordered delivery every day.…

How Do I Motivate Myself To Do Things I Don’t Enjoy

How Do I Motivate Myself To Do Things I Don’t Enjoy

Mood & Motivation
I remember that in the past I used to lose all my motivation to work after checking my to-do list for the day. All my to-do tasks were either boring things i didn’t enjoy doing or things outside my comfort zone. It was always a big struggle for me to motivate myself to work. Without even noticing, I would always look around for other stuff to do. I would always get myself distracted with questions like “Should I make some coffee? What is in the news? House looks messy, should I tidy up a little?” It was like this whenever I had stuff to do I didn’t enjoy. And when it was too late to start doing actual work, I would feel very guilty about it. A terrible feeling. It’s…

Waiting

Waiting

Mood & Motivation
People who do nothing while waiting somewhere for something, and then get bored and complain all the time really irritate me. If you have such an empty life that you absolutely have nothing you can do besides checking social media while waiting somewhere for an hour, of course you get bored. But we shouldn’t judge people, right? Everyone has their reasons in the end. True, but one should still be careful, because this attitude of “everybody has their reasons” (more…)

How Did Making My Mom Cry Teach Me A Life Lesson

How Did Making My Mom Cry Teach Me A Life Lesson

Mood & Motivation
I don’t remember how old I was back then – however, more than likely, I was four or five years old. Anyhow, in my memory, my younger sister, our mother, and I were in our living room.  My sister and I was chasing each other, jumping around, and making a lot of noise. My mother was trying to do something important, but, I am not sure exactly what it was - I think she was talking on the phone with someone about an important topic. Let’s assume it was an important phone call for now, it doesn’t really matter. It was clear that she needed quiet. She used to work at a bank and come home around 8pm every night. After another exhausting day, she also had to deal with…

Nutrition Bars

I am a big advocate of eating less and more often. And I get that it is hard to find some healthy food to eat every two hour or so among all that rushing in the 40-hour workweek lifestyle. I personally achieve this by getting a lot help from these things called snack bars, or granola bars, or protein bars, or power bars, or breakfast bars, or meal replacement bars, or whatever bars they are called. Here is a table that compares most common ones. (more…)

Laptop on a Hammock

Products
I enjoy going to an electronics store, such as, Best Buy or Micro Center and checking out all sorts of new electronic devices. I can spend hours doing that. But during this particular Best Buy trip, I wasn’t happy at all. We were trying to find a new laptop for my sister. I was trying to pick the laptop that was most suitable to her needs, based on the technical specs, while she was just trying to pick one based on how it looks. After two hours, I was very frustrated as she didn’t like any laptop I picked, she claimed they were all ugly. And I didn’t like any laptop she picked as they were either not worth the price or had terrible specs. This was about three years…

Kindle or No Kindle

I believe that this is my favorite among all other products that I have on this website. I don’t think anything will beat this, at least in the short term. I am talking about my Kindle Paperwhite. I was packing my luggage for a 10 hour flight when I said to myself, for the first time, I need an e-reader. The books I have in my luggage were just not leaving enough room for the rest of my stuff that I needed to pack. They were not even books that I was planning to read. I had already read them - I was taking them back to my parents’ mini - library. Our family and I have this thing about keeping all our books at my parents’ house, in their…
